Choosing the right card is just the start. How you use it determines whether you earn tens of thousands of points per year or hundreds of thousands. These strategies apply regardless of which travel points card you hold.
Start with the Sign-Up Bonus
The sign-up bonus is the single largest points earning opportunity available. A typical premium travel card offers 60,000 to 100,000 points for spending $4,000 to $6,000 in the first 3 months. That bonus alone can be worth $600 to $1,500 in travel, more than a year of everyday card spending in a single hit.
Timing tip

Most major airlines and hotel programs run online shopping portals where you earn bonus miles or points when you click through to a retailer from the portal before making a purchase. Earnings range from 1x to 30x or more on top of your credit card points, effectively doubling or tripling your total points per dollar.
For example, buying a $500 laptop through an airline shopping portal earning 5x miles, while paying with a credit card earning 1x points, nets you 3,000 total currency units on a $500 purchase. The portal earnings stack on top of your card earnings at no additional cost.
Dining Programs and Hotel Restaurant Bonuses
Separate from credit card dining multipliers, most major airline and hotel loyalty programs offer dining programs that award bonus miles when you register your card and eat at participating restaurants. These are free to join and require no action beyond registering the card once.
